Taxi's, trolleys, busses...
Getting Around Dalian
Taxi's: As in all cities there are the standard cab companies operating in Dalian. If you're here on business and you want to be re-imbursed for taxi fair, ask for the reciept (fapiao). All taxi's have reciepts for thier passengers, if they don't they're not legal taxi's.
Usually GoChinaSites.com recommends several different forms of transportation for different purposes within any given city, but as Dalian's taxi fare's start at 8RMB and are 1.2RMB per km afterwardand the city is quite small in diameter, why not just take a taxi all the time?
3 Wheel Taxi's: These cute little autos are actually motorcycles with a chassie. They can be good at getting you around in crowded areas but are not recommended for long excursions as they are not very safe on big roads and the exhaust is not often ventilated properly. None-the-less they are quite fun and a very Chinese experience.
There are no meters in these vehicles so you'll need to bargain. Just remember wherever you're going should cost you less than what it would in a taxi.
There are also 3 wheel pedal bikes which are nice if your not really trying to get anywhere in a rush (or anywhere too far away). These guys will try to charge you more than locals though if they think they can get away with it. Best idea is to state clearly where you are going and the price you are willing to pay straight away like you've done the trip a hundred times.
Busses: Usually 1RMB between any 2 destinations, the city busses are very frequent but not altogether clean or comfortable.
Trolleys: There happens to be a most anomalous form of transport in Dalian; the street trolley. The trolly-bus system was established in August 1909 and still runs today. This is a must do. The track runs around the original parts of the city and can give you a good idea of the way in which the city developed.
